I got to shoot one a few years back; I got a good pattern on the target and contributed to the .22 shortage.

The Israelis take a swing at advanced 5.56 ammo.

Israeli IMI Systems Develops Enhanced 5.56x45mm Ammunition Called 5.56APM

It doesn't say anything about barrel lengths, though.

Is that an ELCAN? It looks to be mounted way too far back.

Vietnam 1968 - This big-bore weapon was captured by 3rd Division Marines during an engagement with the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) near Dong Ha. The “big gun” has been fashioned from a M-79 grenade launcher and is equipped with a fast-draw spring holster made from a cut-down U. S. pistol holster.

More probably for early experiments with 5.56mm, since it is in PPU depot*. 1:12 twist rate as original M16...

*Depot has quite a collection including 7.9x57mm version of BM59, 7.62x39mm AR-10 (same as on Finnish trials, but with brown plastic furniture), 7.62x39mm 18" barrel AR-18, FN-CAL and many, many more exotics. But they refuse to allow taking photos of most of those... :(

Before the BM-59, wasn't there a yugoslavian prototype / not adopted 7,92 M1 Garand either?

Yes, rework of M1 for 7.9x57, 20 rounds mag (from ZB-26/30) and shortened barrel. It went nowhere when we got whole SKS production line for free. Now, timing of development of  both is simultaneous, and it is quite possible that at least some work was done with Italians.

Unfortunately we might never know for sure, cause Italians supposedly destroyed all BM59 documentation and most of our is lost... :(
