Something I have wondered for a while, is I have seen collectors with military surplus radar sets., Are they sold to the public fully functioning? Or are made so they can not emit any longer before being sold to the public or given to museums?

BMP-1A1 Ost. Yes, the Bundeswehr bothered to modify them for the few years they were used in the Bundeswehr. Among the changes are the headlights, added turning signals and a foam filled tanks in the rear doors for safety reasons. I think the heater was modified as well.

Am I imagining it, or did someone convert some of those for the Border Guards?

Wonder what perception was, esp compared to Marder.

You imagined that. The BGS had only a handful of armoured cars in the eighties and nineties although formally still combatants.

Isn't that the "gill plate" spring loaded side armour that was only around for a few years? I thought that had all gone by 1989?

This is a T-72 with TPD-2 range finder, modernized to level T-72M with TPD-K1. The "dog-ears" were never part of the modernization program. There was a license for the full-length side skirts only in the late 80s.
