I have just purchased a new HP laptop (lower end i3 processor, 6 gb ram), and I am installing Linux Mint 18 on it.  Mint 17 on the old Compaq was nice, but the battery was shot, and it was a brick to carry.  So this new one with a 13.3" screen is lighter, faster, and going to be my main laptop machine.  Anyone else out there? 

 

I really like Libre Office, and some of the other Linux applications over the MS alternatives.  I am starting the boot into Mint 18 Cinnamon desktop right now.  Opera was the only browser that I could get onto Tanknet during the recent unpleasantness with Google.

I installed Linux Mint 17 Xfce on increasingly aging PC couple of months ago, and not only it gave it a new life, but some graphical programs like Blender and GIMP run much faster than on my newer Windows 10 machines.

I have to use Win10 more often because of compatibility with some other specialised programs, but I love Linux very much. Very smooth and fast, performance oriented.

Stick with 17.3 for now, 18 is having a lot of issues.  I am constantly rebooting for some reason.  I don't think that 18 is stable yet.  Plus I cannot now find Opera for Linux at all.  the dpkg manager seems to lock things up for some reason.

Thanks for the heads-up. I plan to start messing around with Mint again, particularly with VMs. Fortunately I did not delete the 17.3 ISOs from my hard drives.

It is a little unstable, but I am no way a Linux guru.  I like it enough that I am posting on Mint/Chrome.  The touch pad is too sensitive on this laptop, so I am turning it off.  I like it on this cheap laptop.

Rather than fork over my life to Microsoft on a silver platter, I put Mint on, and have been very happy with it. Only issue I have is my microphone/headphone jacks don't work. I'm in this line of work, so I can eventually figure it out... but I'm in no hurry to. I start asking myself why I still run Windows *anywhere*

FWIW, TankNet is working great for me via the Pale Moon browser http://www.palemoon.org/

Pale Moon was forked from Firefox 24, and has seen brisk development focused on fixing bugs, plugging memory leaks, and patching security vulnerabilities instead of adding new features.

This has made it extremely stable (30 to 40 days between browser restarts, for me). It still sometimes eats a lot of memory, but is very good about releasing that memory when the corresponding tabs are closed.

Most Firefox plugins work under Pale Moon, but you need to either use the appropriate (older) version of the plugin or, in some cases (like AdBlock) use Pale Moon's own independently-developed version.

I'm running it under Slackware Linux, but it should jfw under Mint as well.

I feel the same way, and would rather run Win10 as a guest on Linux than vice versa, but I am working long hours and don't have time or energy to jack around with driver issues right now.

Oddly enough other than the wireless issue, things have really settled down, and so far are working great.  Other than Photoshop, I really don't need any Winders products.  I am pretty pleased with how quick it responds.  Oddly the one program I use all the time in Windows: Task Manager is missing.  I like having Task Manger running so I can keep an eye on resources.  I can't seem to find something like that for linux.  And Conky which was recommended, just does not seem to play well with Mint 18, and I am not sure how to configure it since I am still very unfamiliar with Linux commands/scripts.

God.... seriously Murph, don't... I played with alpine during the turn of the millennia and it wasn't fun then. I can only imagine the pain to do it against gmail (I had some sort of control on the mailserver at the time).

Why would you want to use Alpine? There has to be something more modern and that others (that aren't using vim to write reports) use that you can go with instead.

 

This is just a friendly note, I can understand that you would like to get something to work but alpine might be quick but it isn't really user friendly.

2012'ish I was archiving a few gmail accounts via IMAP4 with mbsync: http://isync.sourcef...net/mbsync.html

That gives you the content (one message per file, headers intact). Getting your preferred reader to display that content would be up to you.

The short version,

1)

enable imap on gmail, which you seems to have done, holler if you haven't

2) start alpine

3) press "S" for setup

4) press L for collectionlists

5) press A for add collection

6) Give the collection a nickname, enter imap.gmail.com:993/ssl/[email protected]

7) your email address is probably not [email protected] so change that to your email

8) press enter and you will be prompted your password, enter it

9) press ^X (ctrl-x) to save

 

Now you should be good to go.

I have been impressed with Mint 18. I am slowly migrating everything from winders (except my gaming pc.) what impressed me was my Asus Tablet (which has touch and a wacom pen digitizer) install of Mint left me no troubles, everything just works. No wierd configuration of the pen or touch or bluetooth keyboard/mouse.

 

For a work PC I built at work  for a customer that wanted a SUSE host (openSUSE they have a release Tumbleweed and Leap ) with Xen virtualization environment running Windows 7. I've considering playing around with that too now that I've gotten my hands in it. One thing is overhead for running Xen is very minimal and while doing stuff in the VM the host runs fine.

Do you get any errors Murph? I'm thinking that the port 993 might not be open either on your computer or on your isp... Sorry, I can't really give any good advise other than that.

 

Hm, one thing you might want to try, install thunderbird (mail client) if you haven't already got it and try to add the gmail account there, then you can at least see if you can connect to gmail using imap from the computer.

Thunderbird works.  I have also tried port 587.  I get an error, but cannot recall what it is at this time.  Thunderbird works well.  I can always check gmail and Yahoo mail online if need be now that the wireless issues are fixed.  I really like Mint 18 and the HP laptop.  Battery life is not the 8 hours, but closer to five, which is still way, way better than the 30 minutes on the old Compaq laptop I had.

I tried SuSE, but I really like Mint/Cinnimon.  Ubuntu was ok, but I really hate their new interface.  My desktop is still Winders since I have to have Photoshop and gaming.  Later after I build the new system (next year) with 64 gb of ram, I will run Photoshop on WINE.
