I'm not sure I can place fault on the part of the responding officer. He was operating on good and bad info. I think my critiques lie in how the woman officer handled the situation. She tried going for "command voice" but failed repeatedly on that regard. She then tried force, but didn't have the horsepower to make it work. So, she finally defaulted to deadly force and applied it badly. The ASP baton across the guy's thigh would have been better. Taser would have been more ideal I suspect. But she had him calm at several points.

Probably would have been best to distract the guy with nice talk, and engage him with the mother and other woman there calming him down. Her continued reversion to Tell and then force was doomed to failure because she could not successfully use the Tell and Force part of Ask, Tell, Force.

America is a police state, we would be radically better off with just an elected sheriff and damned little else.  People need to solve their own problems, if you can't solve your own problems, you suck, too bad.  S/F....Ken M

For some reason I was googling the Waco biker shootout -- the aftermath just seems like an amazing DA clusterf*ck. Well, it's going to end with nine people being shot to death (who were shot by police, who were shot by bikers is very much up for debate) and no charges. Amazing. https://www.npr.org/...t-that-killed-9

I'm putting this in here because, well, it's close enough.

https://arstechnica....r-from-his-car/

In summary - does removing a GPS tracking device that the police put on your car provide sufficient probable cause for the police to get a warrant to search your property on the grounds that you committed theft by removing it (!)

Uh, that is a good question, I don’t know.

How does one tell if a tracker or bug has been legally placed pursuant to a valid warrant or illegally placed by a stalker?

Again, I am not sure, but the police one might have a police number or something on it.  We don't use them, so I really have no information.  I would suspect that removing it would not be illegal as long as you did not destroy, alter, or sell the tracker and returned it to the rightful owners when requested.

An officer said his McDonald’s coffee came with a vulgar ‘pig’ message. He made it up.

Herington Police Chief Brian Hornaday, enraged by what he described as an insult to one of his newly minted officers, wanted a viral moment.

A McDonald’s employee had written “f---ing pig” on the officer’s coffee cup, Hornaday said in a Facebook post Saturday, and when confronted, the restaurant offered a free meal to the rookie cop. “A Big Mac and large fries doesn’t make up for it,” Hornaday wrote.  The officer, whom Hornaday did not name, was making a “joke.” But in a nod to the brush fire nature of social media that can spin a narrative out of control, the chief admonished the officer for not coming forward after the story made national news.

“We can see how something so serious can get so out of control very, very quickly,” he said. Earlier Monday, Hornaday deleted his original Facebook post, which revealed the store’s address.

The attention prompted threats to the store in nearby Junction City, he said, and advocates rallied in the officer’s defense. Law Enforcement Today, an online publication written by and for officers, said it sent care packages of coffee after it identified the officer before the ruse was revealed.

Make shit up like that, you should be fired. Critical lack of judgement. The story also suggests that the police chief needs media relations training, or should simply keep his trap shut unless it's important.

He/She needs to be off the job and back to life as a civilian ASAP.

More than that is required.
