To get back to the selection and procurement process of the G36 successor:

SIG-Sauer withdraws from the competition, becaue the BAAINBw requires that any technology submitted not be under export control restrictions. which means ITAR killed it for SIG-Sauer, because the MCX series has been designed mostly in the USA.  BMVg does not comment on the press statements of private enterprises.

RUMINT has it that the MCX has problems with the presentation of projectiles ("Geschoßvorlagefähigkeit"), too, which is also a core demand by BAAINBw for the new rifle. So ITAR may be a cheap excuse.

So that basically leaves the Rheinmetall-Steyr RS556, HK416 and HK433 in the race. If others have submitted their bids like FN or Beretta or CZ UB or FB Radom is unknown so far. Well maybe they just did not bother. It looks very much like a slam dunk for the HK433, because RS556 and HK416 are both heavier than the target weight requirement.

Rheinmetall/Steyr have now also withdrawn from the competition. This leaves HK as the only German contender, though there might still be others.

Infantry Weapons
Latvia orders infantry small arms
Bruce Jones, London - Jane's Defence Weekly
06 February 2018

Latvia is to be supplied with a full range of small arms over the next seven years, German arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch (H&K) announced on 2 February.

The Latvian National Armed Forces (NAF) signed a EUR13 million (USD16 million) contract for the purchase of G36 5.56 mm assault rifles for use by themselves, the Zemessardze (National Guard), and border guard service.

Ever since .300 Whisper/Blackout came to my attention, I thought the cartridge was a good match for the G36C. H&K agrees after many years:

HK237 with telescoping butt:

The intermediate distance weapon for Special Forces

The HK237 is an indirectly gas operated weapon with push rod drive in connection with a rotating bolt head having locking lugs,  in caliber .300 Blackout/.300 Whisper for special ballistical operational scenarios. From the point of view of operational tactics, this intermediate caliber is used especially by police and military special units in connection with a suppressor in low noise close range fights against protected and unprotected targets. The strengths of this caliber are shown above all in urban confined spaces such as fighting in built up areas where the issue is maximum mobility and target effect at short ranges. These are both the fight against primary  targets up to a distance of 150 meters and against secondary targets such as monitoring cameras, light sources, guard dogs, etc.

From a design point of view the HK237 in calibers .300 Blackout/.300 Whisper has been designed on the basis of  the tried and proven G36 in caliber 5.56 mm NATO. An absolutely identical operating and field stripping drill as well as completely ambidextrous operation are thus ensured to the user for both caliber groups. No additional training will be required.

Depending on the customer’s requirement, caliber change will either be carried out by exchanging the complete upper receiver or by changing the barrel inside the weapons original receiver.

The HK237 is available in the barrel lengths 9” and 12.5”.

Features

  •    Assault rifle properties with submachine gun dimensions
  •     Low system costs through interchangeable calibers by using existing G36 assault rifles. Achieved by changing the complete upper receiver or by changing the barrel within the current weapon receiver
  •     Low logistical expenditure due to the compatability of G36 spare parts and accessories
  •     A completely ambidextrous weapon
  •     Use of subsonic and/or supersonic ammunition possible without a gas regulator
  •     Compact weapon through a retractable buttstock. Buttstock interface for installation of all current G36 buttstocks allowing ease of storage in vehicles
  •     Drop safety acc. To AC225/D14 with the safety on/off
  •     Sight rail with Mil-STD-1913 profile at 6 an 12o’clock positions. Modular slim line handguard with HKey Interfaces

Operationally proven assault rifle system on the basis of the G36
