Well we are doing the same with the Apaches. We are refurbishing (or buying new ones, depending on who you talk to) about half the Apache fleet we currently have.

I dont blame the Defence Secretary. I blame the Treasury whom is obsessed with budgetary responsiblity over all over considerations. If the Russians ever drive up Marble Arch, we can at least console ourselves with having got our books in order.

It's very hard to come up with a scenario that has the Russians in London and believe me, I have tried. Given that we do need tanks, do you think its sustainable for us to go it alone making or modifying our own, albeit with the help of foreign or international companies, or should we bite the bullet and import something modern, effective and sustainable? I really like the look of South Korea's latest offering.

K2 is no doubt a good tank. Good looking tank too.

I have heard it has cooperative engagement capabilities like Japan's latest MBT. The thing that put me off the latter is that Japan might revert to not exporting weapons. That is probably paranoia on my part. We already have the ROk building ships for our RFA.

I'm quite certain Japan would be willing to export tank or tank related technology since they have been pretty eager to export other defense related equipment to trustworthy countries like the UK.

Maybe I dont see a future in divesting ourselves of yet more of our military industrial capacity and putting good men out of work.  It also overlooks the opportunities we now have with Rheinmetall to get into producing more European AFV's. Pulling out of the Challenger 2 update just makes that less likely its going to happen.

But hey, its just a personal opinion.
