So what is the status of Germany's rifle to replace the G36? Haven't heard anything in some time.

Considering the Bundeswehr is as good rid of UvL the whole nonsense might be ended by her successor.

Ended as in "Bundeswehr keeps the G36" or as in "quit stalling and get on with the procurement of a replacement"?

There's upgrades such as the Steyr/Wilcox offering:

The first production lots have to be replaced and the later lots reach end of life as well in the following years. So to me it makes sense to introduce a successor that is better suited to today kitchen sink that is going to be mounted on rifles. But all the back and forth UvdL could have spared us all.

The G36 is designed around the plastic receiver. replacing it with metal makes the resulting gun rather heavy. OTOH barrels and bolts & carriers etc. are still fine, whereas the plastic receivers reach the age limit. so this recycling of parts has an appeal. Especially as teh whole bolt carrier asembly is a rather complex and expensive piece in the G36.
