I just noticed, when looking at the picture above of the Dante Alighieri, that there are smaller, completely unprotected, guns mounted on the roof of the main gun turrets. :blink: Would they really be manned when those big guns go into action? :unsure:

Well, battleship probably wouldn't use its main guns against torpedo boats anyway.

Because they are arranged with the main gun barrels, I suspect these are subcaliber guns for training.

No, it is 3in guns for torpedoboat defence. It was quite common for early dreadnoughts to have secondary guns on main turret tops, Dreadnought herself had it also.
