I had a chance to return to Rome last fall and I was surprised to see quite a few plaques commemorating this or that monument being excavated or restored by order of Mussolini. I know he ordered the excavation of Ostia, much of Pompeii and had sections of Rome demolished so that ancient ruins could be brought to the light... Among many others.

How do modern archaeologists look at his works?  Were these as bad as Schliemann's trench, or were these done to the standards of the time?
