Anyone planning to go to the Tank Fest event put on by NMAW.org and VMMV.org in Nokesville, Virginia Sept 23,24?  I plan to be there.  If anyone wants to say hi, look for a guy with a video camera wearing a "LST 393, Muskegon MI" baseball cap.

Here is the link to the event description.

When you come across the WWII Brit Recce guys they'll be my group of chaps, say Hi! I won't be there, other things to do down here in Georgia.

You'll missed a pretty fun weekend in Nokesville.  Had fun hanging out with DogDodger.  I got plenty of video footage, hopefully I will get it editted and on my site soon.

Is it normal to intentionally get behind an M4A1 while it's being started up just to smell the exhaust?  I was able to cross that off my bucket list this weekend.

Well, you do need to turn the engines over by hand if they've been sitting for a while...

Great meeting you, Walter! It was another great--if warm--event for them. This was my fifth time attending, and they're still able to drive stuff that I've never seen run before. :) A universal carrier and a CVR(T) Scorpion were both new for me this year. Looking forward to seeing your film.

I saw them doing this, but I was unable to capture it on video since i was busy filming the Marine assault re-enactment.

I've shown up a day ahead of time at VMMV in years past since my WWII group gets invited every year to help dress up the WWII British stuff and I was camping on site. I ended up helping Marc and the other volunteers get set up. One of my tasks, was find the hand crank for that grant and turn the engine over 80 cranks of the handle. There's a nice reduction gear so it's not too hard (turning over my ferret is harder).

Well the weather was unkind to the event last weekend. The field was saturated on Saturday, and with additional rain forecasted for that evening and the next day, they cancelled the event for Sunday and stayed open a couple hours longer on Saturday instead. A number of familiar machines were absent, and I presume the weather affected the preparations. They did run their M4A3, however, which was nice since that's the first time I've seen one moving since Ft. Knox in 2009. Instead on Sunday I ran over to the National Museum of the Marine Corps again on the off chance that the modern wing would be open. It wasn't, but that museum is always worth a walk-through. A bonus was happening upon a concert by Heeresmusikkorps Koblenz in the atrium. Some pictures are below.

A paradox is a German soldier playing bagpipes at the USMC museum. :D

Some video clips from last weekend. Please forgive the amateur camerawork; I have a hard time not being distracted by looking directly at the subjects. :)

M29 Weasel. The jingling sound its tracks make at low speed was unexpected.

Newly-restored M-50 Sherman.

T-55 had very slack tracks. Did that model have a reputation for throwing them ?
