I always liked the story of Gilded Age socialite Tessie Oelrichs asking Teddy Roosevelt to have the fleet come to Newport and anchor behind her oceanfront mansion for an epic "white ball" one summer.  When TR said no, he couldn't commit the US Navy as props for a soiree, she simply had huge facsimiles made out of white plywood and docked offshore.

Seeing that fleet steaming in line into a harbor must have been on the history's great sights.

First links in first post do not come up. Nice map. Several years ago Avalanche Press did a book that featured the GWT fighting the local fleets as it passed by.
