This was interesting too, even though its probably untrue.

A Jewish man who fell down a toilet in Tewkesbury died because he refused to be rescued on a Saturday
The story of the Jew of Tewkesbury was recorded in John Foxes Book of martyrs, published in 1576. It described an event that is said to have taken place in 1257 when A certain Jew fell into a privy at Tewkesbury upon shabbat (Saturday); who for great reverence he had to his holy Sabbath, would not suffer himself to be plucked out.
And so Lord Richard, Earl of Gloucester, hearing thereof, would not suffer him to be drawn out on Sunday for reverence of his holy day. And thus the wretched superstitious Jew, remaining there until Monday, was found dead.
Although this tale circulated widely, it is almost certainly not true. It is, however, one of a number of stories that sought to depict Jews as different and on the fringes of mainstream society. An investigation in to the mythical story scooped a top local history prize for its author Richard Sermon. His article, The Jew of Tewkesbury, An Urban Myth? won the 2006 Bryan Jerrard Award for the best Gloucestershire local history article published during that year.

Reminds me of when I used to live next to a Hasidic neighborhood in Brooklyn. On the Sabbath the locals were always flagging down people on the street to come over and turn on their refrigerators for them. :)

Incidentally, talking of old Bridges, the worlds first Iron Bridge is under restoration. It was built in 1781.

There is a strange story about that, there was a fund created to maintain 'old' London Bridge, and it made so much on tolls that it still exists, even though the bridge it was supposed to maintain has ceased to exist for something like 300 years.

Still pays out a lot on local charities and the arts apparently.

London Bridge doesn't fall down. It gets sold to a Yank and is rebuilt in Arizona. Apparently a 50 years ago yesterday in fact.

Yeah, there have been several London Bridges, going back to Roman times. The most commonly known one (the one the song is about) was built in the 1100's apparently, and demolished as recently as 1832. This pictures shows the Medieval one on the right being demolished, and the one on the left, the New London Bridge (or old New London Bridge, or even New Old New London Bridge depending on how you look at it) is the one the Yanks bought. Well thats whats happens why you buy on Ebay Fellas. :D

The old one demolished on the right was one of those house bridges IIRC? With basically a quarter to itself along the road on the bridge.

English Venice. :D
