The 5th image there, the model kit, is not mine.  I don't think a kit was ever issued at any rate; that's likely a home-grown kitbash someone did there.

I believe among the reasons they passed on this bird was that it couldn't carry the AIM-54 (I don't know if it was structural, electronic, or both), and also the issue of trading in a known quantity for something more revolutionary.

Anyway, enjoy the photographs all.

What did they do to the beloved Phantom?!? :o

It looks fugly, a daemon spawn of an unholy intercourse of an F-4 and MiG-23. Didn't they get the memo that F-4s supposed to shootdown MiGs and not have sex with it? :D

Good find, wasn't aware of this one. Thanks for posting.

Ah, the Phantomcat. :D

It could never have worked, as Loggins had not yet split from Messina.

Oh yeah there's NO chance for friendly fire in the event of a close-range fight here. :)

F-4s were confused with MiG-21s over N. Vietnam.  When Thuds started shooting Sidewinders, their Phantom escorts quickly exited the area.  In Thud Ridge, Jack Broughton mentioned such an instance.  A-4s were also mis-identified.

It is amazing what stress will do.

Complicated, lots of weight and priorities for ACM changed in the 80's away from raw performance to re-incorporate WVR ACM.

What exact timeframe was this F4-VG proposed?

Was it an F111 competitor/F111B replacement program contemporary to tomcat or something post-1970?

Seems a strange program once you start getting to ~1975 and F15, F14 and F16A are all on the table for the US and Tier 1 NATO nations, and I can't imagine the export market projections would ever have been big enough to justify development, even with countries like Iran, Israel or others that may have been seen as potential big buyers.

It was proposed as a competitor to the Grumman F-14 IIRC.

Both are delta winged of same general shape and in hurry (when there is no time for finer details such as size), on uncertain ranges such miss-ID is more then possible.

You're right but the Rhino is so fooking ugly that it's like confusing Michelle Pfeiffer with Yasser Arafat. Each has (had) two arms, two legs and neither shaves (shaved) their faces. And mixing them up in hurry disregarding finer details like size might end in tragedy if you picked the wrong one
