Why did the Germans move Western Allied POWS late in the war from the POW camps they were in?

I can only speak for my Grandfather, they moved him out of Poland, I guess late 44, because they were in danger of being 'Liberated' (if thats the right word) by the Soviets. So most of them had to walk all the way from Poland back to Germany. My Grandfather was lucky in some respect. He had bad frostbite from his time in Poland (that the Germans gave him really rather good plastic surgery on for the day) so at least part of the way back was on a German Flakship. Most of the others were not as lucky. In fact I know for a fact some of the soldiers on that march disappeared and were never seen again.
Im not sure if they actually moved them in Germany, ive not heard that, but if they did the explanation of keeping them away from allied hands is plausible.
