Since the Search function is absent, rather than resurrect X-Files' old weird news thread I thought it better to start a new one. Easier on the IPS monster, too. So here's my inaugural news bit;

http://www.livescien...d-psychics.html

Consider the case of Colleen Leduc, a single mother of an autistic eleven-year-old girl in Barrie, Ontario. On May 30, she left her daughter Victoria at her elementary school. Leduc was soon called back to the school urgently, and confronted by the principal, Victoria's teacher, and a teacher's aide (educational assistant, or EA). Puzzled and alarmed, Leduc asked what was going on. The group told her that they believed that Victoria was being sexually abused. They had contacted the Children's Aid Society, a case file had been opened, and her daughter might be taken from her "for her own safety."

Leduc was shocked by the explanation: "The teacher looked at me and said: 'We have to tell you that Victoria's EA went to see a psychic and the psychic asked her if she works with a little girl with the initial V. When the EA said yes, the psychic said, 'Well, you need to know that this girl is being sexually abused by a man between the ages of 23 and 26.'" The EA reported it to the teacher, who then went to the principal, and so on.

The next time you hear the refrain that teachers are underpaid, recall this sad tale! :o

I am placing the below in the weird news simply because -- at what point in the grand cosmic scheme of things, or a severe case of mental retardation as their norm, do the Palestinians believe they are not the chief part of the problem?

Israel to build new settlement in West Bank

I was driving last week and listening to the top of the hour AP news on the local radio station when they had a report about some terrorist wannabes that were arrested in Israel who tried to contact al Qaeda for help in their plot. The report ended with a comment that the Palestinians are concerned about growing al Qaeda influence in the territories because they're worried how a connection to AQ would negatively impact their image.

Wouldn't want to tarnish that sparkling Palestinian image!

I don't know where to even begin on this one. First, this is NOT an Onion parody, Second, I'm amazed that even NPR could write this article with a straight face. To get the full impact, read the article and then scroll down to the picture.

Feeling The Economic Pinch
Struggling In Ohio As The Economy Tightens
by Yuki Noguchi

All Things Considered, July 17, 2008 A generation ago, the livelihood of Gloria Nunez's family was built on cars.

Her father worked at General Motors for 45 years before retiring. Her mother taught driver's education. Nunez and her six siblings grew up middle class.

Things have changed considerably for this Ohio family.

Nunez's van broke down last fall. Now, her 19-year-old daughter has no reliable transportation out of their subsidized housing complex in Fostoria, 40 miles south of Toledo, to look for a job.

Nunez and most of her siblings and their spouses are unemployed and rely on government assistance and food stamps. Some have part-time jobs, but working is made more difficult with no car or public transportation.

Low-income families in Ohio say they are particularly hard-hit by the changes in the economy, according to a new poll conducted by NPR, The Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard School of Public Health. Two-thirds of lower-income respondents, or 66 percent, say paying for gas is a serious problem because of recent changes in the economy. Nearly half of low-income Ohioans, or 47 percent, say that getting a well-paying job or a raise in pay is also major problem.

'I Just Can't Get A Job'

Nunez, 40, has never worked and has no high school degree. She says a car accident 17 years ago left her depressed and disabled, incapable of getting a job. Instead, she and her daughter, Angelica Hernandez, survive on a $637 Social Security check and $102 in food stamps.

Hernandez received her high school diploma and has had several jobs in recent years. But now, because fewer restaurants and stores are hiring, she says she finds it hard to find a job. Even if she could, she says it's particularly hard to imagine how she'll keep it. She says she needs someone to give her a lift just to get to an interview. And with gas prices so high, she's not sure she could afford to pay someone to drive her to work every day.

People tell Nunez her daughter could get more money in public assistance if she had a child.

"A lot of people have told me, 'Why don't your daughter have a kid?'"

They both reject that as a plan.

"I'm trying to get a job," Hernandez says. "I just can't get a job."

Hernandez says she's trying to get training to be a nurse's assistant, but without her own set of wheels or enough money to pay others for gas, it hasn't been easy.

'What's Going To Happen To Us?'

Most of their extended family lives in the same townhouse complex. The only employer within walking distance is a ThyssenKrupp factory that makes diesel engine parts. That facility, which employs 400 people, is shutting down and moving to Illinois next year.

The only one with a car is Irma Hernandez, Nunez's mother. Hernandez says that with a teenage son still at home, the cost of feeding him and sending him to school is rising, and she can no longer pay for the car.

She's now two car payments behind.

"I'm about to lose my car," she says on her way to pick up one of her daughters to take her to Toledo. "So then what's going to happen to us?"

So Nunez and her daughter are mostly stuck at home.

The rising cost of food means their money gets them about a third fewer bags of groceries $100 used to buy about 12 bags of groceries, but now it's more like seven or eight. So they cut back on expensive items like meat, and they don't buy extras like ice cream anymore. Instead, they eat a lot of starches like potatoes and noodles.

Apollo Astronaut Says Gov. Is Covering Up UFOs
Edgar Mitchell Claims Government Conspiracy

POSTED: 2:49 pm EDT July 25, 2008
UPDATED: 4:14 pm EDT July 25, 2008

LAKE WORTH, Fla. -- Edgar Mitchell's suburban Lake Worth home is a small shrine to the nine hours and 17 minutes he spent walking on the moon.

...

The Apollo 14 veteran said that he believes the U.S. government has been covering-up the truth for more than 50 years.

"Military pilots, airline pilots, mostly, from all over the world, for 50 years, have reported these things, but they've quit because they're told to shut up and not talk about it by military and intelligence people," Mitchell said.

The 77-year-old said the deception began after the alleged alien landing in Roswell, N.M., in 1947.

Ever since, Mitchell claims, the government has been keeping proof of alien life -- and alien visits -- under wraps.

I think you'll find more than a few of the Apollo / Gemini / Mercury astronauts are very open to the belief, if not believers in little green men, including the rock-star astronauts like Glenn and Aldrin.

And the "starving americans" article is truly the funniest thing i've sen in a while, my coworkers are looking at me funny as I wipe tears from my eyes...

Yesterday at home, my niece who had arrived from school (1st year college) told us about her male professor in her General Science class (i.e., Earth sciences like geology, etc.). She said her professor was clairvoyant and that one day her prof taught his class to open their third-eye and be clairvoyant. He also taught and used hypnosis on them. He will then teach them about the psychological effect of sexual arousal. My niece is around 18-ish IIRC. Prof is 27 and single. If - if - he tries to do something fast on my niece... can I borrow an FAE from you guys to waste the fucker?

The sh1t they teach now.... <_<

All Your Base Are Belong To Us:

LONDON (AP) - Britain's second-largest city, Birmingham, has a new skyline _ only it belongs to its Alabama namesake.

Birmingham City Council in northern England distributed 720,000 leaflets that praised residents for exceeding recycling targets, carrying a message that read: "Thank You Birmingham." The message appeared stamped across a photograph of the city's skyline.

But the photo was not of Birmingham, England, but of Birmingham, Alabama.
