Sometimes  Hollywood DOES listen. :D

From what ive read, its not a CGI tomcat, or at least not completely. They have gone through the archives, presumably of stuff they shot for the first one, and other stuff filmed elsewhere pre 2006, of real tomcats in flight, and just digitally altered the livery on it to match what they filmed on deck. Or at least, that is what one article claimed. So hopefully we will be spared any Pearl Harbour or Dauntless sillyness of it behaving like an S4 Flying Saucer.

Yeah, I saw a clip of that earlier, looks well done. Think I would have prefered Starlight Express though. :D

Also the line at the start is kind of non-sensical: "you have been promoted up to Captain, but we haven't applied the up or out with you and haven't kicked you out while others have fallen because... Tom Cruise!"

What a waste of Ed Harris, he should have been leading some Retcon Marines...

^Fixed it for you.

Oh well, war movies have 50 year olds playing privates, no biggie.
Going from Tomcats to Rhinos seems almost a downgrade. Any way, if there is plenty of good realistic-looking flying action (not a given for Hollywood), who cares.

Ain't seen the movie yet but I might rent the DVD based on the strength of Denzel Washington's performance:

Just watched the trailer.

Can we have a proper sequel that doesn't remake shots from the original? This movie has the case of the member berries.

It better be, because the story the original jacket told was all over the place.

For starters, I don't think Maverick was on any Far East Cruise in 1963/64.

Any story can be made up to make sense out of anything. Rogue One tied things up nicely between episode 3 and 4. However, whatever background story there is for the slightly altered jacket, the reason for making up whatever story line for the Jacket alteratio is so that it can hit PRC theaters.

Its OK, worth a rental, but a bit of a letdown compared to the original.

I remember Mad magazine's take on Top Gun. At the end, Maverick's CO tells him "Maverick, not only will you go down in history as one of the best pilots I'm the Navy, but also the man who started World War 3!" (mushroom cloud in the background)

Im guessing the backstory is that it was his fathers Jacket.

They actually did a pretty good job at filling in the blanks in the film. For example, the cockpit mockup had the film crew putting on realistic labels to everything. I get the impression Tony Scott was as much a stickler for unseen detail as his brother.

Oh well, its just a jacket.

Looks like Mad Magazine is still going. Maybe still going with the same kind of flare like usual :)

Better late than never. The ideal moment for a sequel would have been the last year of the F-14 in USN service.

Cruise is starting to look his age, unfortunately.

Even in 2006 it was well past its best. I gather they put a 1.4 mach limit on them. They were pretty much falling to bits.

I cant help think a prequel might have been a good idea, about what happened to his old man. They have only just withdrawn the QF4, so the flying sequences would have been possible.

Yes, the jacket was his father's but the patches were... odd. Apparently his father decided to collect patches from all the ships in the cruise in which he disappeared, hence Galveston (a cruiser) and the patch of CRUDESRON 9, but then it seems some Marines at the filming site went over to help and the jacked received a III MEF patch and a Marine aviation patch which would be curious on a naval aviator jacket...
