Greek elections: New Democracy 'on course for majority'

Greece's opposition party New Democracy are set to win the country's snap general election, exit polls suggest.

Led by Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the centre-right party is projected to defeat Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras's leftist Syriza party.

New Democracy is forecast to win 38-42% of the vote, while Syriza is projected to win 26.5-31.5%.

That would give New Democracy an outright majority, as the winner receives 50 extra seats in parliament.

The first official results are expected later on Sunday evening.

The exit poll, conducted jointly on behalf of several Greek broadcasters, also predicted that the far-right Golden Dawn party and the nationalist pro-Russian Greek Solution were both close to the 3% minimum needed to enter parliament.

MeRA25, the left-wing party of former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, was also projected to just exceed the electoral threshold.

The centre-left Movement for Change was predicted to win 6-8%, vying with the Communist Party's projected 5-7% share.

Prime Minister Tsipras, who swept to power in 2015, called the elections after suffering defeat in the local and European votes in May.

Well, the European Parliament just confirmed Ursula von der Leyen as next Commission president, if rather narrowly at 383 of 747 votes.Still somewhat surprising she made it at the first go given all the animosities between institutions, nations and parties in the European elections' aftermath. Apparently she won over most of the Social Democrats even though the German SPD members vowed not to vote for her; conversely, the Green group said they didn't support her, but the German Greens did.

Reports suggest that health minister Jens Spahn is frontrunner to become next German defense minister if he's stupid enough to take the job. Well, it could be worse. Maybe.

ETA: Or by latest reports, it's gonna be CDU head Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, despite earlier claims that she declined.

Spahn as the health minister seems to get shit done™ - for better or for worse is still an open question of course, but he seems to more more than most predecessors. So I'd kinda like him to stay where he is, and be it just to face the consequences (or reap the benefits) of his current decisions.

AKK as defense minister... welllll......... I suppose she deserves a chance.

Looks like Merkel no longer likes her.

Depends on who you ask, in Germany.

Me? Russia.

Lefty McFruitloop? USA (or Israel. Or both. But it's not about Jews. Just the evil Zionists that are also ruling the US. Even though Trump is an antisemite. Which just proves how clever they are.)

Officially: "Germany has no enemies but is committed to NATO", or something along those lines.

UvdL promised more "gender equality" and a "green deal" and the social democrats fell for this.

You forgt  "encircled by friends!"

And also the ideologically undetermined fringenuts who hope that Trump will save Germany from NATO imperialism driving it into a war with a Russia that is Europe's last hope against the invasion of immigrants engineered by the Zionists. :D

In practice, German defense policy is reorienting to counter a possible Russian threat against Eastern Europe, while also trying to accomodate the South Europeans (namely France) who see the main security challenges in instability in Africa and the MENA region, and American demands for participation in global missions.

Early warning for Italy. Well, it has actually been expected for as long as the Lega's poll numbers have overtaken the Five Stars'.

Italys Salvini pushes for a new election over deadlocks

By COLLEEN BARRY 40 minutes ago

MILAN (AP) Italy faced a government crisis Thursday as Interior Minister Matteo Salvini of the right-wing League party called for a new election, saying his partys coalition with the populist 5-Star Movement had collapsed over policy differences.

Salvini urged Italys premier to verify whether the coalition still had a governing majority in parliament.

The ruling two parties have been at odds recently over a host of policy issues but tensions spiraled Wednesday after the Senate rejected a move by the 5-Stars to kill a EU-funded high-speed rail link with neighboring France. The massive infrastructure project known in Italy as TAV was backed by the League and sought to improve rail links across several European nations.

As tones hardened, Salvini met with Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte on Thursday. After the meeting, Salvini issued a statement saying the TAV vote clearly showed that the ruling coalition had collapsed and called for a speedy election.

Lets go immediately to the Parliament and verify that there is no longer a majority, as was evident in the vote on the TAV, and quickly return the word to voters, Salvini said.

Conte was expected to seek a confidence vote in Parliament and if the government lost, that would set the stage for a new election.

It was unclear when that might happen, as parliament has adjourned for its summer break and would need to be recalled. In the case of a no-confidence vote, it is up to Italys president to call a new election.

The 5-Star leader, Luigi Di Maio, responded to Salvinis statement by saying his populist party was ready to go to a new election. But he sought to put it off, saying an election should not happen until after parliament gave its final approval to a reform reducing the number of lawmakers, a vote scheduled for early September.

Earlier Thursday, the right-wing League issued a statement complaining of deadlock with the 5-Star Movement on a variety of issues, saying it is useless to go on adding that the only alternative to this government is for a new election.
