This one is a bit unusual. There has been no formal request (as of yet) by Canada but the FMS case seems to be "pre-approved" for some reason. Is this a case of "We're pretty sure it's a done deal so let's do the paperwork now"?:

I can't see how that would help as the Aussie ones are completely knackered too.

They have been upgraded (avionics & structure)....but any purchase of old RAAF jets would be a purely political move: "see, we addressed the fighter capability gap!"

WE are short of pilots, techs and parts for the planes we do have. Apparently neither pilots or techs want to spend their careers in areas away from Urban centres.

So Canada has a Sikh for a Defence Minister. Watch for things really taking off when they nominate a Gurkha, first thing you see is budget coming down to the bare minimum, just enough to buy a few thousand strange looking knives. Now this is a correct immigration policy being applied.

The problem being that Boeing no longer even makes planes of the same type as the Bombardier aircraft in question.
