We now have a lot more background on the French Navy's commandos, now that they are in action in counter-terrorism. Four 'tourists' held by jihadists in Burkino Faso were rescued by a contingent of Commando Hubert, losing two of their petty officers in the fight. Yesterday's national memorial for them revealed in President Macron's eulogy that they were acting as pointmen in the night attack on the enemy encampment when they were met with gunfire from the tents after taking out a sentry. unable to return fire IOT safeguard the hostages they rushed straight into the fire, saving them at the cost of the pointmen, Cedric de Pierrepont and Alain Bertoncello, both chief petty officers (E-7), now posthumously raised to sub-Lts (O-2)

Is the now much more detailed wiki entry

Is the national ceremony honoring the fallen, including the personal meeting of President Macron with the families, his speech to the nation and the honors conferred on the two fusiliers.

Is the English interpretation of Mr Macron's very moving speech as part of the homage.

It goes without saying that Mr Macron continues to set a high standard for civilian heads of state for state ceremonies and honors to military forces as well as police and fire forces. There is no politicizing or (done by every US president from RR) phony military saluting while in civilian clothes going on.

The rescued four were flown back to the French base at Villacoublay [SE of Paris] for a rather terse greeting by President Macron.

Ken, I chopped a bit you'd cut and pasted twice out of the above post. Hope you don't mind. Chris.
