Magazine. From Max Popenker's site - note smooth magazine with cuts at the bottom and also shoulder rest attachment point on the stock:

"Normal" Lewis - note non-smooth magazine w/o cuts:

Dutch Lewis were not that rare in Yugoslavia, Germans armed some of colaborators with those (SDK and SDS mostly).

Guns were however most probably converted to .303 post-ww2, de facto 3rd caliber in Yugoslavia. Weapons in that caliber (machineguns mostly) were used largely by airfield defense units, and Brens (and Bulgarian ZB-33 converted to .303) were used until '70s due the air force having supply of .303.

Ah that makes sense, that the captured machine guns had been transfered to Yugoslavia to fight the partsans. Thank you.

As I said elsewhere, I am surprised that gun has not made a movie debut. Or maybe it has and I just don't watch movies anymore so I wouldn't know.

Is that our "Canadian Colin" who gets thanks for arranging the opportunity to showcase the weapon?

I immeadiately thought "Why?" followed by "That's neat!". Some good things don't require a rational explanation :)
