So did H&K simply not submit anything because of the last several ill-fated pistol competitions? And what are the odds of the Army actually taking advantage of the modularity to field some in alternate calibers? Slim-to-none?

Marine riflemen carried pistols routinely during the assault and clearing of 2d Battle of Fallujah; CQ fighting saw many reverting to pistol or knife in house clearing, especially if rifle jammed at awkward moment. I was shocked when USMC announced a couple of years later that USMC would cut pistols from inf bn armories. Don't know where we are now. Is Echo Five Mike reading this thread?

I have little free time these days. It's my understanding that there is to be a float pool of pistols to be issued as needed to crew served gunners and the like who don't have M4 carbines.  Similar to the M249 SAW vs M27 IAR story.  S/F....Ken M

... pistol ...

Small, medium and large frame revolvers....

Revolvers were good, even if they were just a compilation of good parts (DA mechanism with single V spring and side-ejecting cylinder were both previously used in revolvers). I would dare to say they were better military revolvers than a S&W, but by that point day of military revolver has already passed.

Pistols however, they lived on the old fame of 1911. Their pocket pistols after 1903 and 1908 (both by JMB) - Junior, Mustang were rebranded Spanish copies of JMB design. Anything they tried (2000 All American) turned to thurd. They even managed to make 1911 lemons (Delta Elite).

Unbelievable. Pistols are now "weapons systems".  No wonder we can't buy anything quickly nor cheaply.

Any idea how much has this weapons systems evaluation and acquisition program cost this far?

And the lockwork is a 'fire control system'.

Did the solve a frame cracking? I remember father's story about his friend who got one in the early '90s, frame started cracking after less then 500 rounds. :(

A major issue is failure to use the proper spring rates, as well as going ape shit on ammo, Norma 200gn at 1200fps ammo beat the Hell out of the guns.  180gn at 1200fps, using 26lb spring changed routinely and a shock buff makes life easier, and I've got a legit 3000+ rds on one of mine.

It's not a piece of tupperware, like any 1911.  If you're an undisciplined slob, get a G-lock and enjoy the Spongebob trigger.  S/F.....Ken M

So ... why are pistols needed in the first place?

Secondary weapons primarily.  I'd prefer something like an integrally suppressed Mk 18 for issue to people who don't need real rifles/carbines.  S/F....Ken M

At least 'motivating defeatist troops' has fallen from favor. :P

Not in bestest of all possible Korea. They have politruks to inspire the loyal troops.

European armies had disciplinary officers long before commies made it fashionable. :P

$207 is not that hard to imagine, the Glock goes for around $300 with 5 mags mil/police contract, polymer lends itself to big runs as the main cost is the moulds. Plus the marketing factor is worth every penny. Fondled it at Shot, very nice trigger and comfortable, I may need another Sig.

So did anyone see the Beretta pistol? Ugly and Medieval looking. You can use it to scrape the flesh off of your enemies once you run out of ammo.

Beretta APX

very prominent ribs on the slide. Apart from that nothing special. Your average modified Browning system tilting barrel plastic wonder 9.
