Actually few people remember now that pro-Russians started with demands of referendum that will allow Eastern and South regions of Ukraine to keep closer ties with Russia. So if calling for referendum, it is logical to hold it not only in pro-Russian-controlled part of Donbass, but in all regions of Ukraine, to allow every region to choose where it would like to go  - closer to Russia or closer to West (de-facto, it will be decomposing now dead Soviet Ukraine into original Russian Empire south Russia region + Polish part + Austro-Hungarian part).
Also, it is now forgotten that there was similar referendum in Donbass in 1994 (as new President Kuchma fighting old President Kravchuk)

The solution needs to reflect the reality on the ground and the wishes of the respective populations in situ. Unless it does, this conflict will go on forever.

Not forever as Ukraine in current form is running out of time. Soviet time infrastructure is allready outdated, and no replacement visible. Actually even if they suddenly decide to join Russia - i'm affraid Russia will be unable to maintain the cities in livable condition. Replacing `15 nuclear reactors is hard task.

Nicely lined up for a Rockeye attack. Does thinking that make me a bad person? :)

Pro-Ukrainians were unable to stand temptation - tonight this training cite (former Lugansk air navigators school) was shelled, parade T-34 under repair damaged, one T-72 sustained light damage, 4 or 5 trucks burned. Probably it was the end of OSCE drones flights - next time they will be shot.

The Ukrainian Army has done this kind of nocturnal anti-vehicle shelling before, though as in the previous case it seems they were aiming solely at the vehicles and avoided personnel casualties.  The T-34/85 seems to have survived, though a viral request for spare parts will need to be sent to Russia and Belarus quickly if its to be repaired by May 9th.

A photo from a recent Ukrainian Army exercise: The close-up of the BMP-2 is useful for its detail but especially noteworthy is the PKM gunner assault pack, normally holding 500-600 rounds of linked ammo:
