That's a pretty pricey missile:

There are 8 BMD capable destroyers that can be equipped with 56 SM3-blk1B missiles. If spread out evenly, then 8 per ship. There are some November articles talking about 8 so not sure if the 8 is included in this 56 or if its additional.

36 SM-3blk1A have already been procured and deployed, 4 of which used in BMD tests. The tests occurred in the years around 2008. The remaining 32 were for the four Kongo-class destroyers, 8 for each.

Some SM-3blk2As have also been approved by FMS I believe. 4 for tests and 13 more if I'm not mistaken. Kongo can't use these so these only go on the two Atago class destroyers and the two new Maya class destroyers (second one still under construction).

Did Japan plan to ever adopt Aegis Ashore? Also are the Kongos only capable of Block IA/IB? It surprises me they wouldn't buy the IIA.

Yep, two installments of Aegis Ashore are in the FY2019 budget and FMS approval was given at the end of January.

For the Kongo-class, I think the limit is the BMD system. The systems were updated since the ships entered service. Originally was something like Baseline 3.6 but now its something like Baseline 5.1 or something. IIRC they can't operate SM-3blk2A. Atago class was launched with Baseline 7.2 or something but are being upgraded to Baseline 9. Maya comed of fresh with Baseline 9. IIRC, SM-3blk2A requires at least Baseline 9.

Yes, baseline 9 is needed for Block IIA and I believe also SM-6.
