Actually the Soviet Army had more in common with the Tsars army than you would think. I was reading a rather good book on the Russian Army before the fall of the Tsar and it was quite common to have the Army on harvest duty, often with kickbacks to the units commander for providing the Troops. And hilariously, the Soviet Army did just the same thing, up till the early 1980's anyway. In fact they were even sending troops back from East Germany to help with harvest detail after the exercise season concluded. They only stopped when they started getting antsy about Ronald Reagan kicking something off I think.
