Why would a rifle be mounted on the barrel of a Russian ZiS-3? Aiming?

Or (much less likely as I think the Czechs were the only Warsaw Pact army to use one, and on an RR), ranging.

From the way it's mounted, definitely sub calibre training. The first shot with a full calibre round would immediately lose your zero - that wouldn't matter with sub cal training as you're not shooting full calibre rounds.
