Top Taiwanese military officials dead in Blackhawk crash a few hours ago.

A lot of stars and gold braid went down with it.

A testament to the Blackhawk that 5 survived what looks to be a catastrophic (birdstrike?) failure of some type.

Leaked map shows China plans to invade S. Taiwan after taking Kinmen, Penghu

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A photo surfaced Sunday (Jan. 19) on Weibo showing People's Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers sitting next to a map of Taiwan that appears to indicate a southerly route for China's invasion of Taiwan, first going through Kinmen and Penghu, before landing troops in southern Taiwan.

Reminds of when the PLA was practicing on a mock city that obviously was of Taipei with the presidential building in 2015. Although that wasn't leaked or even "leaked", but with the footage of the training just straight and plainly put on TV.

PLAN destroyer points laser at a US P-8A not far from Guam. Destroyer 161 is Type 52D Hohhot that was commissioned in Jan 2019.

A Peoples Republic of China (PRC) navy destroyer 161 on Feb. 17 aimed a laser at a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft while it was flying above international waters, according to the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

The incident took place approximately 380 miles west of Guam and occurred without provocation, the fleet's public affairs office said in a statement.

The laser China used, which is invisible to the naked eye, had been observed by a sensor that was onboard the P-8A.

Weapons-grade lasers have the potential to cause serious harm to servicemembers and could have damaged various ship and aircraft systems.

Might be a one off.  Might also be indicative of future actions, in that gradually this type of harrassment will ramp up.

They've been pointing lasers at US forces at Djibouti some time ago. Maybe a first not far from Guam though.

Chinese development of the Buk system, the HQ-16, with a 70km range (it isn't very new, but I don't think we have discussed it before)

Attack against Taiwan now that US and EUR are into Covid emergency?

Or will this give someone ideas for a vírus future release?

South China Sea is too far but JSDF should be able to put up enough deterrance to help Taiwan defend itself. Units on the Nansei islands stretch down towards Taiwan and so can be used to prevent a blockade, along with Japanese naval and air forces.

We shall see, but the threshold for nuclear confrontation is more likely in times like these.
