I thought the interval would be determined by lines of sight; as far apart as possible while keeping the other tanks in sight, even though this would require closing up if conditions warrant.

Far enough apart that you don't provide a lucrative target, close enough to provide mutual support.  We would roadmarch at 100 meter intervals during the day and two cat eyes at night.  Our tail lights sort of looked like this (++  ++).with four individual lights.  When really close, <25 meters, you could see four lights on the vehicle to your front.  As you lengthened the interval the four lights would look like two when about 50 meters away (- -).  By 100 meters all four lights would seem to merge into one ( - ).
