The island on this second one is a bit sharper looking than the first one.

I guess they took the opportunity to improve the design, taking out Soviet features (SSMs, command installations) and improving the stealthiness of the design.

The P-700 launchers and UDAV-1 ASWR were stripped from Liaoning too.

Yes, but the structure needed to support them would have been harder to strip out. It's better to start with a clean design.

Pretty sure the space for the SSMs was still dead space in Liaoning, where as presumably the new CV makes it usable for something, if not additional hangar.

IIRC the rationale for removing them was to increase space for aircraft, if not they may as well have kept them or some other VSL system put in instead. Though even if there are structures that cannot be messed with easily, space still should be pretty fungible, eg. you could expand the hanger by moving something adjacent to it into the space where the SSM were.

I'm pretty sure I read once that the way it was laid out, there wasn't structural support such that it could be open space. I've always wanted to the view the hanger from the aft forward to get an idea but I never see a picture from that angle. Either way, pretty sure Chinese sources quote the new one as having a larger airgroup, which implies more space was made somewhere.
