OK, here is the newest version of the NATO OOB:

NATO OOB Mk VII

Major updates for this edition include a completely new Austrian OOB and a re-work of the FRG OOB, with vast details on the TerritorialHeer. Additionally, dozens of smaller changes have been made.

The gaping hole here remains the French OOB -- it still remains mostly the same as that of the original document, although it has been expanded upon.

Man, when you said the next version'd gonna be shockingly comprehensive, you weren't joking. You're owing my paper half an office day spent on reading this. :D

Some of my earlier guesstimates on helicopter numbers, since revised, appear to have sneaked into the current version. All Heeresflieger regiments had five VBHs, not four, and my last BGS chopper list looks like this:

- 33 SA 318 C Alouette II
- 15 Bell UH-1D
- 10 Bell 212
- 22 SA 330 J Puma
- 3 AS 332 L1 Super Puma
- 17 BO-105

Heeresfliegerstaffel 4 appears twice, once under 5th PzDiv (should be HFlgStff 5, of course). Also the Stabsstaffel of each Heeresfliegerkommando is missing their "el" end. There are various other small spelling and grammatical mistakes in German words and location names; for instance, the plural of "Zug" is "Züge", but it's mostly petty stuff. I can make a list sometime when no further additions appear to be forthcoming.

The brigade engineer companies would have the same number as their respective brigade with a 0 added (e.g., Panzerpionierkompanie 10 for PzGrenBrig 1).

Since you have listed the replacement battalions of the corps and territorial army, will you add those of the divisions too? Might become a little unwieldy though with five each (x1 through x5, preceding the respective Jäger/security battalions in numbers).

I'll get these changes made later today and updated. I probably should add something on the replacement battalions; I think a decent compromise would be in the notes section.

Thanks,

Pat

Boawww !!!
Really good work!!!

Some remarks on the German Orbat:

- The Flugabwehrkommando of 3rd GE Corps is located in Koblenz
- Heeresfliegerstaffel 5 of 5th Panzerdivision is located in Mendig
- Staff of 5th Panzerdivision is in Diez (Lahn is a river flewing through Diez)
- Brückenpionierbataillon 170 of 1st GE Corps and 270 of 2nd GE Corps are reserve units only
- The Feldersatzbataillon of the Luftlandebrigade 27 is FErsBtl 140, of LLBrig 25 is FErsBtl 240 and of LLBrig 26 is FErsBtl 340

I think I can clear up some more points.

Some notes on Spain:

*All the M48s were already M48A5E2
*The M41 were mostly retired by 1987, although a small number survived into 1989-1990
* All the M113s were virtual M113A1 as the small number of petrol powered M113 were upgraded in the 70s to diesel engines becoming A1
* The 90mm AA were long retired by 1989.
* Correct designation for the Spanish Mirage III is Mirage IIIEE

Still some odd stuff around 143 and 160 Bdes.

The full names of all Bdes are:

2 (Southeast) Infantry Brigade (drawn down from a regular bde, hence the odd numbering)
15 (Yorkshire) Infantry Brigade (numbered after the 15th (Yorkshire) Inf Bde of WW2, which encompased Bns of all 3 Yorkshire Ridings)
42 (Northwest) Infantry Brigade
43 (Wessex) Infantry Brigade - SW approximating the Wessex borders (as far east as Hampshire)
49 (Eastern) Infantry Brigade
51 (Highland) Infantry Brigade
52 (Lowland) Infantry Brigade
54 (East Anglian) Infantry Brigade
56 (London) Infantry Brigade
107 (Ulster) Infantry Brigade (Numbered for 1st Brigade, Ulster Volunteer Division (107 Bde, 36 Div on Mob in 1914)
143 (West Midlands) Infantry Brigade (no Light)
160 (Welsh) Infantry Brigade

1 R Welsh at Warminster is in 143 Bde
1 Welsh Gds in London is 56 Bde
4 RGJ in London is 56 Bde
6 LI is 43 (Wessex) Inf Bde
3 and 6 R Anglian are 54 Inf Bde
There should be a Regular Bn in 52 Inf Bde (at Edinburgh), this is 1 KOSB (18d, unassigned)

In fact while I'm at it, all the 18's are:

a, b and c: 56 (London) Infantry Bde
d: 52 (Lowland) Inf Bde
e: 1 RRF is with 1 WFR in 3 Inf Bde in Northern Ireland, see below for the *permanent* (i.e. 2 year tour) units in the province
"2nd b": 2 LI is the UK based Bn of 6 Bde
f: 143 (West Midlands) Inf Bde at Bovington, Catterick and Warminster
g and h: UK based recce for 3 Div
i: 1 Arty Bde
j: UK based AD for 3 Div

20a: 56 Inf Bde
20b: 143 Inf Bde
20c: 42 Inf Bde
20d: 43 Inf Bde

23: There is a Bde HQ for these, I can't remember the no though. Hang on, 22 and 23 are the same thing and should be merged.

Headquarters, Northern Ireland

3rd Infantry Brigade (Omagh, UK)
1st Battalion, Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters (Omagh, UK)
1st Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers (Ballykinlar, UK)
2nd Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Co. Armagh, UK)
3rd Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Co. Down, UK)
11th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Craigavon, UK)

8th Infantry Brigade (Londonderry, UK)
3rd Battalion, Queen’s Regiment (Aldergrove, UK)
1st Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment (Londonderry, UK)
1st Battalion, Royal Hampshire Regiment (Ballykelly, UK)
4th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Co. Fermanagh, UK)
5th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Co. Londonderry, UK)
6th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Co. Tyrone, UK)
8th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Co. Tyrone, UK)

39th Infantry Brigade (Lisburn, UK)
1st Battalion, Duke of Wellingtons Regiment (Holywood, UK)
1st/9th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Co. Down, UK)
3rd Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Co. Down, UK)
7th/10th Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (Belfast, UK)

Perhaps I can dig out a regional bde map?

Some more remarks to the german ORBAT:

The information about the FERsBtl's of the Luftlande Brigades is from the following book:
"Fallschirmjäger, Die Geschichte der 1. Luftlandedivision 1956 - 1994"

Most of the divisional Engineer Battalions are still showing the wrong equipment (Though the right one is listed in the notes).

The Heimatschutzregiment had at first 10 106 mm Recoiless Rifles but by the time 1988 / 1989 this has changed to 7 tanks M48A2C. The tanks were not in the battalions but in an AT-platoon which was part of the "Stabskompanie" of the Regiment.

Also in the Heimatschutzbrigades the Jagdpanzer Kanone had been replaced by M48 of different kinds (A2C or A2G2).

FErsBtl's 610 and 620 are listed as part of TerrKdo Schleswig-Holstein and as part of WBK II.
TerrKdo S-H is correct.

Panzergrenadierbtl. 113 (of PG Brig 11 / 4. PG Div.) and Panzergrenadierbtl. 192 (of PG Brig 19 / 7 Pz Div.) are marked as may not been existed. They did exist. 113 was in Cham and 192 was in Ahlen.

All of the divisional Artillerieregiments had a third battalion called "Beobachtungsbataillon".
The number of this battalion was the number of the regiment plus a "3", so the Beobachtungsbataillon of Artillerieregiment 10 had the number 103.

Gents,

Wouldn't it be easier to put all of this into an MSExcel spreadsheet format, with each countries services or commands on one sheet?

With as many changes as there are, it appears it would be easier. Once set up, all Pat has to do is announce what changes there are then the readers download/print out just the changes and they update the files.

I'm working on correcting/expanding the US Strategic Air Command [for you Major Kong/Duke Nuke'em types] (during breaks on the Byleorussian MD), so I'll try that format and see how it works.

Hi Pat, great job as usual!
I just checked the italian army and it seems some things have been lost here and there. I acn't upload the file (same problem as for Konev?), so I paste them here. It's a bit long though, and format goes to hell... Some of the following are already in your last version, I repeat them hoping it helps to find them.

Gents,

I have created a test file for the US Strategic Air Command (7th and 42nd Divisions, 8th Air Force).

[DAMM, DAMM, DAMM Still cannot attach/upload files]
[WILL SOMEBODY CONTACT THE MODERATOR AND TELL HIM SEVERAL PEOPLE ARE HAVING TROUBLE UPLOADING FILES. THIS IS REALLY TICKING ME OFF.]

REMEMBER, THIS IS ONLY A TEST PAGE, NOT AN OB!!

I figure if this is acceptable, this format could be used for the rest of the OBs.

OK -- I'm starting to work my way through these. i've got the Dutch items done (although i have some more questions, which i'll get to a bit later today or tomorrow). I'll wait on the SAC stuff, and do the FRG items next. I'll do the Italian and British changes after that.

Thanks everyone,

Pat
