Same as the West drawing red lines etc.

A lot of posturing, little real interest in what happens and even less plan what to do afterwards.

We seem to be in an age of instant gratification.

There generally seems to be a lack of critical thinking on all sides, If I hold this nail and hit it with this hammer at the same time as I close my eyes what is likely to happen. Six months ago everyone was saying how good a chess player Vlad is. I have difficulty seeing what he would class as a win and what he will have won.

The more Russia screams and shouts the deeper the hole they dig and the West keeps giving them a shovel and a bucket to help them get deeper.

He is more and more being best by choices they made in the past. And Putin is getting more and more painted into a corner, by his own device.

I said before, i think this is going to be an Agadir moment. The 'we dodged a bullet' moment. My fear was less what happened this time, but the next time when he paints himself into a corner he cant duck out of, because that day is coming. Heck, even Glenn now admits its conceivable. :D

I dont disagree with the shovel and bucket analogy. Time will tell whether this was once such instant, or the day we told them to pay for what they use.

They didnt shoot at all, if first reports are correct. Which either means their S400 is the brokedest of broken things, or there is literally no point in Russia being there because they fear the response. Its not like they can put a roof on the Syrian Republic, Su57s or no.

The mental gymnastics will be fun to watch.

Apparently their bases were not threatened. Which because nobody in their right mind would deliberately bomb a Russian base, you have to wonder what the Russian contribution to Syria's air defence is, because they seem to be doing bugger all about it.

OTOH, S400 has proved the best of all air defence systems, 100 percent accuracy. Zero shots fired, zero targets hit.  :)

The Russians fired zero missiles. The Syrians fired a fair number of Pechora. Not much sign of Osa but they are point defense. Very Marlburian.

Do not adjust your TV nothing actually happened, it is just black with the occasional light spot and some guy looking for the snack bar.

Brits reportedly used Tornados... Pretty risky. What standoff capacity they have?

Light spots are probably this "sparks in the air all around" reported by Russians from Damascus. Cluster ammunition?

The target, if any, engaged was flying at a very unlikely altitude for a cruise missile.

Rus MOD statement (no English subtitles for the moment)

Key points (My translation)

  • 103 missiles detected + some guided bombs;
  • No participation of French planes detected;
  • B1B bombers were entering Syrian airspace over AtTanfa.
  • No casualties among Syrians known at the moment;
  • 71 cruise missiles intercepted by Syrian AD. This is result of high training of Syrian personnel and significant technical help of Russia over last 1.5 years in rebuilding Syrian AD;
  • Decision taken few years ago not to sell S-300 to Syria following request of “some of our Western partners”  now subject to be revised, not only for Syria but also other states;
  • 4 missiles targeted at Duvali (?) airport – all shot down;
  • 12 missiles targeted at Dumeir airport  - all shot down;
  • 18 missiles targeted at Blai(?) airport  - all shot down;
  • 12 missiles targeted at Shairat airport  - all shot down; Airfields not damaged;
  • 9 missiles on not used Mezze(?) airfield – 5 shot down;
  • 16 missiles targeted at Homs airport -13 shot down. No serious destruction there;
  • 30 missiles targeted at installations near Barza (?) and Jeramani (?) – 7 of them shot down. This objects, that were claimed to be part of Syrian chemical program, partly destroyed – but they were out of use for long time, no people or equipment there.
  • Russian AD was raised to combat alert, fighter aviation waiting in the air; No single cruise missile entered Rus AD zone, no Rus SAMs fired.

Probably killed a plane

I think it was a missile loosing target and self-detonated at high altitude. Or some kind of relatively small UAW sent to assess the results of attacks short down....

One of the targets  - Barzeh (=Barza in RusMOD statement?) research centre; As we see it is right on years-long frontlne between Jobar and Duma, so expecting any kind of chemical weapons work there is quite madness

China TV is new CNN :)

Well that was riveting. Interesting editing and timeline in film. Did you actually spend an hour and a half watching that?

Of course not. What I see is this Chinese video primary source to many other reports, meaning it is becoming news feed provider.

Same as the 2017 Tomahawk attack: the attacking cruise missiles are simply out of range of the S400, probably under the radar horizon. Some Russian sites love to give the impression that a S400 site can defend all of Syria, citing theoretical ranges of the missiles themselves, but everybody here knows that effective engagement range depends on properties of the target (speed, manoevrability, altitude, radar cross section, jamming,...) and that the SAM site has to see its target before it can engage. That does not mean the S400 is broken - all NATO airforces, including the Turks, seem to take it very seriously when operating in or near its killzone - just that it still obeys some fundamental rules of physics.

Love the Russian/Syrian claims to have shot down a lot of missiles at places that, in all likelihood, weren't targeted to begin with. Fantastical successes for those very old missile systems. Not terribly believable though.
