Russian Su-35 aircraft intercepted Israeli warplanes over southern Syria on night of September 10, a day after 18 persons were killed in a suspected Israeli attack on a Syrian army post hosting Iran-affiliated militia.

The Russian aircraft took off from the Khmeimim air base and intercepted Israeli aircraft over southern Syria, Russian website, Avia.pro reported citing unnamed sources. A couple of other Russian news resources too reported this incident without attribution.

Israel has not commented on this development and earlier reports of its aircraft striking supposedly Iranian positions inside Syria. The Russian MoD too has not made any comment about its warplanes intercepting Israeli aircraft.

Installations of S-300 missile systems by the Syrians do not seem to deter Israeli whose aircraft attack Syrian targets with impunity. However, with Russian warplanes in the sky, the Israeli aircraft withdrew without confrontation, another Russian website, Avia.ru writes.

Russia was under pressure from Syria since the attack on September 9 when Iraeli warplanes targeted a Syrian arms depot and posts hosting  Iranian advisors in eastern Syria, near the Iraqi border, killing at least 18 persons in a nighttime attack.

Significantly, during his visit to the Russian city of Sochi on Thursday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Russian President Vladimir Putin that his country must be allowed to act freely against Iran.

I would say that Netanyahu and Israel just received Russia's response.

I suspect Israel will not be deterred and that working out a framework to avoid future interceptions was part of three hour talk.

The airstrike of the 9th was conducted against two sets of warehouses on a sprawling Iranian base just on the Iraqi border, on Iran's road to the Med:

Nature of the friction between Russia and Israel involves attacks on the Syrian army and targets in Lebanon, not attacks on Iranian targets.  Doesn't sound from this article like anything was accomplished by the Israeli visit to Moscow.

Not Israel visit – but Netanyahu visit. He is seeking reelection (his career and even fate depends on result) and gaining political support from Russia is important, taking in consideration all ex-Russian Jews who still watch Russian TV. Posing next to Putin was the message for them

Which is odd to say the least, as Israel has never, during the civil war, attacked SAA targets other than in retaliation.

Didnt the last raid killed some Syrians at an SAA facility that was used by Iran? In any case nothing will significantly change the calculus of the relationship.

Could be that Russia needs to placate their ally by showing some teeth to the Israelis, the IDF obliges by going up and then turning back when the teeth are shown, Syria happy, Russia is happy and Israel know the important bits are still in place.

Good news, everybody! Putin, Erdogan and Rouhani have agreed to give Syria a new constitution.

Russia, Turkey and Iran agree to move toward new constitution for Syria

Issued on: 16/09/2019 - 23:02

Text by: NEWS WIRES

The leaders of Russia, Iran and Turkey announced Monday that they agreed to form a committee tasked with rewriting Syrias constitution as part of a political solution to the countrys civil war, now in its ninth year.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told journalists at the end of the meeting with Russias Vladimir Putin and Irans Hasan Rouhani in the Turkish capital Ankara that the last hitches blocking the formation of the committee have been overcome.

Russia and Iran are key allies of Syrian President Bashar Assad while Turkey backs Syrian rebels seeking to oust him.

The parties agreed on a constitutional committee to be made up of pro-government, opposition and independent members paving the way for speedy talks in Geneva, Putin told reporters.

Irans Hassan Rouhani said he hoped for elections to take place in Syria in 2020 or 2021.

The leaders also agreed to de-escalate the volatile situation in Idlib the last remaining rebel stronghold in Syria while combatting extremists and protecting civilians. A cease-fire that went into effect at the end of August has been holding despite some violations.

Idlib is dominated by the al-Qaida-linked group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Syrian forces, backed by Russia, targeted the armed group in a four-month ground and air offensive but civilians have been widely affected. Hundreds of thousands of Syrians, some already displaced from other parts of the war-torn country, have moved toward Turkeys border.

A major conflict in Idlib has raised the possibility of a mass refugee flow to Turkey, which already hosts 3.6 million Syrian refugees.

Erdogan has previously warned that Turkey could open its gates and allow Syrians already living in his country to flood Western countries if Turkey is left to shoulder the refugee burden alone.

Mondays talks were the fifth trilateral meeting among countries that stand on opposing sides of the conflict.

Regardless what I think of the Regime this site needs the worlds attention UNESCO should set up a office to provide contracts that go directly to the site rebuilding, yes it will help the Regime, but the tradeoff is worth it.

I am really curious what the Wagner and other voenspets actually do. Russian pmc and paramilitary is quite opaque despite remarkable levels of media. I am particularly curious if Kadyrov has elements in Syria. Seeing them run PKM was a masterclass.

for example, I failed to convince him that half-underground ground floor in 1950th apartment blocks in my native Rostov on Don are not result of some conspiracy to cover massive flood that half-covered houses with ground, but result of USSR trying to squeeze as many families from WWII ruins into more or less livable housing conditions.

That's interesting because the Hungarian name of the floor level is underground but it has normal size windows configuration comes from the French word "souterrain" :)

This streetview frame is looking at windows my mother’s family was living in for some time (now it is all commercial spaces, but was flats in past) https://yandex.ru/ma...rce=serp&z=16.5

i must admit that while the map was loading i took a look at the street name and thought you were pulling tanknet´s leg  :)
