I bet the pharaohs propagated faked stories to control the population already millenia ago.

But the level and speed these tales spread is new. And the ease with which several sources supporting each other can.be created via web sites, videos that look like filmed at home etc.

Ok, let's accept that organized disinformation campaigns are an actual problem.

First, what politicians are demanding is IMO not going to work. Within the 24 hour window information can be shared so often that it no longer matters if the original link on FB or Twitter is taken down or not.

So how else does one fight disinformation? With the truth but that only works if the truth is coming from a source that is considered credible. And that's why disinformation works in the first place. Gessler, Künast and Özuguz have actually made absurd statements. The MSM have article 12 of the press codex that is more and more having the opposite effect of the intended one.

This creates the opportunities fakers can exploit.

To be honest, my amount of sympathy with Facebook is very limited. So far they have been notoriosly dragging their feet even in the most egregious cases, unless it somehow violated their corporate code (no nipples!). So FB has demonstrated that they can act very quickly whenever they see business interests at stake, but otherwise they are complicit in smear campaigns because, again, it serves their business interests (web visitor retainment, click rates, and the resulting increased revenue from advertisement).

A business model that is inherently destabilizing to public discourse is nothing that an open society is obliged to tolerate.

Would the law affect so many other news outlets?

The proposal speaks of market dominance to be applicable. This again suggests that a competition of news services is encouraged and fostered, and that it isn't a blunt instrument to wield against the individual blogger or a small news station/paper.

"To be honest, my amount of sympathy with Facebook is very limited."

Mine too but I got the impression they delete and suspend w/o fact checking. Anti extremist organisations and activists have more than once been suspended after extremists swamped FB with complaints.

If that proposal becomes law FB might just delete like there is no tomorrow to avoid the danger of 500 grand fines. De facto censorship?

It certainly creates that impression among some people:

Earlier this evening a truck plowed into a Christmas market in Berlin, at least 9 dead and dozens of wounded. The perpetrator escaped.

The perpetrator escaped.

Uh, no?

The driver was arrested (the other guy dead), per your own link.

Looks like the measures taken for more safety worked this year. Despite the media coverage the two months or so leading up to new year, quite a lot of groups of certain northern african young men have traveled to cologne to attend the party.

article about the press conference of cologne police: http://mobil.ksta.de...ktrum--25469296

Of course the usual suspects talk of "racial profiling" and police overstepping its competencies.

Ms. Peters was backpaddling in the evening news already. Cute.

I don't think the Greens've received the memo that people are no longer responding to PC motivated self-righteous attempts to create scandals, but rather want results, and this being a good result. It's like the fake news about the Künast tweet that "we got to help the killer" - it would be utterly ridiculous to consider that true news, were it not for the inane statements in the past that move this one into the realm of the possible.

Pretty much. While the new Cologne police commissioner admitted that the internal shorthand "Nafris" for North Africans being checked at the station shouldn't have been used on Twitter despite this being the quintessential shorthand medium, it was telling how quickly other leading Greens were distancing themselves from Peters and profusely thanking police for keeping a grip on the situation this time.

Some Syrian was actually arrested in the Saarland for allegedly plotting a terror attack on New Year's Eve using fake police cars as VBIEDs, but he reportedly stated he only made it up it to support his family with money he got for it from the IS, and authorities seem inclined to believe him. In the absence of any such threats, Germans made do with blowing themselves up like every year (a single Berlin hospital alone treated 14 for severing some limbs etc. with illegal fireworks), and killing themselves with cars (six dead in a mass pileup on a Bavarian autobahn in thick fog at one in the morning). Though the bigger news was two guys starting a wildfire on a New Year's camping trip in Bavaria where on of them fell down a mountain ... it was initially reported a signal fire he started to guide rescuers to his position got out of control, then later that this was their campfire, and he fell while trying to put it out. It's gonna be a great year - no terrorism is a match for good old human cockuppery!

Bad comparisons IMO. Driving and using fireworks are risks people take voluntarily, being killed by terrorists is what people want to avoid. And all the recent terrorist attacks in Germany are the result of human cockuppery!

Breitbart lives from clicks. The more outrageous the better. Just like oldschool yellow press and tabloids did back in ye olden days. Princess Diana pregnant again, wife minces husband, BILD talks as the first and exclusive with the meat balls...

Why should a website like Breitbart be any different? Their circulation is the number of clicks and page visits they can generate. If they can inflage an incident good. If they can make something up whole cloth that is good too.

The truck driver had already been reported by other refugees to authorities as dangerous for looking up bomb making and having suspicious pictures of men with firearms on his phone and probable contacts to ISIS in decembre 2015. He was living in Northrhine-Westphalia under the assumed identity of an egyptian, which also was reported as obviously wrong by refugees because of his not egyptian dialect. He seems to have used 14 different identities and applied in several places for asylum with differing identities.

He was officially called a danger in february 2016 and placed on a list but authorities had problems connecting the dots because of the many identities.

Amri travelled several times to switzerland and it is suspected he got the pistol he used from the islamist scene there.

http://www.morgenpos...-Kontakten.html

It gets better:

North Rhine-Westphalia police had him under surveillance for months and read his chats and knew of his plans for a terror attack.

And now for something different. Terrorism that is not related to the so called refugees crisis but to one of our good trading partners of the past and future if politicians have their way:

See how moderate they are? Must be the nuclear deal and sanctions relief.
